If you’ve listened to my podcast or are a scholar of Indian philosophy, you know the name of Stephen Phillips. From his early work on Aurobindo and Advaita Vedānta to his engagement with Nyāya, both classical and “new” or navya, through out his decades-long career, he has pushed forward our understanding of Sanskrit-language texts—and has shown their richness for philosophy, widely understood. As a PhD student at the University of Texas at Austin, I benefited from not just his scholarship but his mentorship. Likewise for my friend and colleague Matthew Dasti (Bridgewater University), another student of Stephen’s, with whom I co-edited a festschrift volume, celebrating Stephen’s work. That book is now available for pre-orders.
Its title is The Vindication of the World: Essays Engaging with Stephen Phillips. The collection includes ten new essays on Nyāya and Advaita Vedānta, on topics ranging from epistemology to metaphysics to logic.
The festschrift unfortunately comes several years after Stephen’s retirement from UT—the Covid pandemic intervened in our planning. At least its contents are timeless!
The book is available in ebook and hardback formats, and Routledge has shared a 20% discount code with me, that applies from June 7 to July 31, 2024: use SMA22 on the website.
